MODULE 4 · SUPPORT

Support Claims with Relevant Evidence

I can…

I can choose evidence from a text that supports my claim.

Teacher objective

Given a written claim, a short source text, and an evidence graphic organizer, the student selects and records at least one relevant piece of text evidence supporting the claim.

1What to do

  1. Watch your teacher choose evidence.
  2. Annotate the source text.
  3. Practice: relevant or not relevant?
  4. Complete your claim-and-evidence organizer.

2Key words

Relevant

Connected to the claim; it helps prove it.

Irrelevant

Not connected; it does not help.

Source

Where information comes from.

Quote

The exact words from the text, in “ ”.

3Learn

Ask: does it prove my claim?

Good evidence answers “How do you know?” about your claim.

Same topic is not enough

A sentence can be about the same topic but still not support your side.

Record it exactly

Copy the words exactly and put them in quotation marks. Name the source.

4Modeled example: Teacher modeling

  1. Claim: “Schools should start later.”
  2. I read: “Teenagers need 8–10 hours of sleep.” — This helps explain WHY later is better. Relevant.
  3. I read: “The school was built in 1975.” — Same school, but it does not prove the claim. Irrelevant.
  4. I record: According to the article, “teenagers need 8–10 hours of sleep.”

5Guided practice (with feedback)

Claim: “Students should have a longer lunch period.” Is each piece of evidence relevant?

1.Students who eat slowly digest food better and focus more in afternoon classes.

2.The cafeteria was painted blue last summer.

3.Many students wait 10 minutes in line, leaving only 15 minutes to eat.

4.Pizza is the most popular lunch item.

Partner talk: This evidence supports the claim because it shows ___.

6Independent assessment

Success criteria

  • Evidence is accurately recorded from the text
  • Evidence directly supports the claim
  • Meet 2 of 2 criteria.

Read the source. Select the sentence(s) that support the claim. Then record one piece of evidence in your organizer.
